"Never doubt that a small group
of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world." - Margaret Mead
Highlands Peace Action was formed by the growing number of citizens
in the New Jersey Highlands who are alarmed by, and strongly oppose, the
Bush administration's rush toward war with Iraq.
The war has devastated Iraq (again), killing thousands of innocent people,
and many of our own sons and daughters -- mostly from minority groups and
from working class backgrounds. None of the white hawks in the current
White House has ever been near enemy fire. They all had the opportunity
and chose not to. Dying in uniforms is a privilege almost totally reserved
for minorities and poor whites.
The war has been a naked act of aggression against a country that hasn't
attacked the U.S., and that - according to a former UN weapons inspector
- had no capabilities of attacking the U.S."
The war is a boon to terrorist organizations recruiting people willing
to kill Americans.
The war will hasten the scraping of the Bill of Rights and the suspension
of American democracy.
The war is costing hundreds of billions in direct costs and potentially
trillions in the economic disruption that has resulted. That means lower
standards of living for everyone.
The war is draining what's left of America's social services, and will
therefore contribute to misery, insecurity and crime all over America.
The war has damaged U.S. international standing and relations with friendly
countries. It has made American foreign policy more expensive and more
difficult.
